Eight places we'd happily spend every sunny afternoon — and exactly what makes each one worth the drive.

Bamburgh Beach
Best for: Bucket-and-spade days and breathtaking views
There aren't many places more iconic than Bamburgh. With its magnificent castle overlooking one of Britain's finest beaches, it's the perfect place to kick off your shoes, enjoy a picnic and spend the afternoon exploring.
Top tip: Walk towards the dunes for a quieter picnic spot.

Druridge Bay Country Park
Best for: Families with younger children
If you're looking for somewhere with plenty to keep everyone entertained, Druridge Bay is hard to beat. There's a beautiful freshwater lake, woodland trails, a visitor centre, play areas and direct access to one of Northumberland's longest beaches.
It's the sort of place where an hour quickly turns into an entire day.

Best for: Woodland walks and peaceful afternoons
With winding lakes, towering trees and spectacular gardens, Cragside feels like stepping into another world.

Check the tides before you travel
The causeway to Holy Island floods twice a day and the crossing times change daily. Never attempt to cross outside the published safe period — not even if the road looks clear.

Sometimes the best picnic spots aren't signposted. The National Park is full of peaceful places where you can stop, take in the views and simply enjoy being outdoors.
